Homeless Plan Shortchanges Public Safety and Rewards Illegal Aliens with Housing
Los Angeles County Mayor Michael D. Antonovich cast the lone vote opposing the County’s $100 million dollar homeless spending initiative. “The $100 million dollar County plan is vague on how funds will be spent and jumpstarts the budget process. It hijacks money earmarked to renovate Sybil Brand jail and end the Sheriff Department’s reckless early release program. Funds for homelessness programs must come from the Departments of Health and Mental Health – not public safety,” said Antonovich. “Along with free housing for illegal aliens, the plan fails to mandate treatment for the mentally ill and drug or alcohol addicted who comprise most of the homeless population.”
The Board failed to pass Antonovich’s motion to remove housing services for illegal aliens but did approve his amendment to add accountability and performance measurements.
