Heroes Of The Fires
Leona Cox Elementary celebrates heroism in all forms during the SCV Fires
Thursday morning, Leona Cox Elementary held a very special assembly. The setting was outdoors, framed by the fire ravaged hills that meet the fence of the playground.
The school was under siege during the Buckweed fire in October. The flames were literally at the school’s doorstep, and had it not been for emergency crews and school staff, Leona Cox could have been extensively damaged. To read the full story on the staff’s heroism, click here .
So when the students gathered outside to thank all of the responding organizations, it was a very personal event.
Members of the Leona Cox Student Council spoke to the crowd, and sincerely thanked the fire fighters and deputies for their effort during the fires.
“Well the reason was to thank everyone who saved our school,” said Amy, a Student Council officer. “We were really grateful that our school is still here today.”
One of the best parts of the assembly for Tiffany, who is another student councilmember, was when student letters to emergency crews were read.
Leona Cox sustained some damage to a building and some trees during the fire, however thanks to the hard work of all Santa Clarita resources, the school was able to resume classes along with the rest of the SulphurSprings School District.
