Grant Befalls Domestic Violence Center
Center to Begin New Teen Program for Domestic Violence Prevention
The Domestic Violence Center of the Santa Clarita Valley was successful in competing for an $8,500 grant from The John Gogian Family Foundation that will enable the Center to begin a much-needed Teen Outreach Program aimed at helping teens dealing with domestic violence.
While additional funding is needed to continue and expand the Teen Outreach program, the initial funding will allow the Domestic Violence Center to develop the program. Discussions have already begun with Bowman High School to participate in teen outreach later this year.
“There is a need in the community for a comprehensive teen program to address domestic violence. We know that and with this new grant, the Domestic Violence Center of the Santa Clarita Valley will finally be able to provide this much-needed program here in Santa Clarita,” explains Jorja Harris, President of the Board for the Domestic Violence Center of the Santa Clarita Valley.
Domestic violence is a growing problem and one of the fastest growing victim groups are teens. The mission of the Domestic Violence Center of the Santa Clarita Valley is to promote and preserve non-violent, non-abusive family systems in Santa Clarita.
The Center provides round the clock shelter and counseling with professionalism and compassion to families in crisis due to violence in the home. The Center also strives to raise public awareness of physical, emotional and sexual abuse in relationships in order to eliminate the cycle of violence.
The Domestic Violence Center is primarily supported through funds received via the State of California Department of Health Services and the County of Los Angeles. In addition the Center relies upon grant funds received from organizations such as Blue Shield of California, the generous donations of residents and businesses within the community and fundraisers such as our upcoming golf tournament.
The new Teen Outreach Program will further be helped by the Center’s First Annual Golf Tournament slated for July 30, 2007 at Robinson Ranch. Golf tournament chairman and Domestic Violence Center executive board Member Kevin Tonoian has signed up honorary co-chairs Mayor Pro-tem Bob Kellar and local businessman Chris Fall to help promote the golf tournament.
Registration for the golf tournament, as well as the ability to make donations is available at the Center’ website at: www.dvcsantaclarita.com.
