The Third Annual Michael Hoefflin Foundation for Children's Cancer Texas Hold 'em Invitational is promising some high stakes fun.

"This is one of our newest fund-raisers, but it has proven to be very popular," said Scott Schauer, executive director of the Michael Hoefflin Foundation."People love to get together and play poker, and the great prizes we've received from our sponsors really add to the excitement."

The action kicks off at 6 p.m. on November 9 at the Spectrum Club in Valencia. Buy-in is $150, and prizes will be awarded to the final 20 players.

The winner, however, jets off to a tropical paradise, as the grand prize is a 7-day vacation at Vista Malibu Resort in Costa Rica, scheduled for March 8-15, 2008.The prize package includes a $1,000 airfare allowance.

The next five top finishers also receive 7-day trips for the same dates to Vista Malibu , where they will compete in a poker tournament.

Lady Luck offers another chance to win if you don't get the cards you need. A one-week stay at Vista Malibu and a $1,000 airfare allowance will go to the winner of the reverse raffle. Tickets for that are $100 and only 100 will be sold.

The event will follow standard WPT Texas Hold 'em tournament rules, with scheduled ante increases throughout the tournament and rebuys available.

Tournament proceeds assist the Michael Hoefflin Foundation in accomplishing its threefold mission of outreach, education and research. Since its founding in 1995 in honor of young Santa Clarita cancer victim Michael Hoefflin, the Foundation has funded more than $2 million of innovative medical research. Staff and volunteers also provide emotional, financial and practical support to families coping with childhood cancers.

Raising public awareness of the childhood cancer through a variety of activities is also a high priority of the Foundation.

"This event keeps getting bigger and better, so we expect it to fill quickly," Schauer said.
