Free Flu Shots For Seniors On Monday

Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital has just been given access to 300 doses of influenza vaccination and will be hosting a free flu shot clinic from 7:30 to 11 a.m., Monday, Dec. 13 on the hospital campus.

Getting a flu shot annually decreases both the chances of contracting the flu and the severity of the virus. It is recommended for people in high risk categories including those 65 years of age and older, those suffering from chronic illnesses; residents of nursing homes and other long-term care facilities; and pregnant woman.

This will be the fourth flu clinic offered by the hospital this winter season and the first to take place on the hospital campus.  The vaccination was provided by Los Angeles County Department of Health Services.

“The best way to prevent catching the flu is to get a flu shot every year,” said Gerald Subar, PharmD., Director of Pharmacy Services.  “Because the flu virus strains that are in circulation change over time, having a shot last year does not mean that you will be protected this year.”

On average, in the U.S., 5-20% of the population gets the flu every year.  It is also estimated that there are over 200,000 hospitalizations and 36,000 deaths each year due to flu complications.

Reservations are not required but shots are limited.  If you are an adult in the high risk category and interested in acquiring a flu shot, go to the TCU Activities Room, located on the second floor of the Nursing Pavilion, 25727 McBean Parkway, Valencia, between the hours of 7:30-11 a.m., Monday, Dec. 13. Balloons and Signs will be posted.
