“He always gave more than he received,” says friend Pat Allen.  Being a Boys and Girls Club director for over 20 years, Allen says he’s been involved in the community “since forever”.

He also played a significant part in making our city what it is today.  Back in 1986, before Santa Clarita was recognized, Donnelly along with his wife Glo, Lou Garasi, Connie Worden-Roberts, and many others worked towards making Santa Clarita its own city.  He also was a member of the City Formation Committee.

Both Sheldon and Pat Allen, community volunteers, met Donnelly at a Boys and Girls Auction back in 1982, Pat said he was a very selfless man.  “He was always a giving and caring man.”

In 1994, while in Mexico, Donnelly fell and broke his neck, and while the incident made him a partial paraplegic and confined him to a wheelchair, Allen says that it didn’t slow him down.

He attended therapy, where he regained some control of his arms and neck.  He said he felt independent again, and even started driving.  "It was the beginning of a new life for me," said Donnelly, who later signed up to volunteer at the CSUN Aquatic Therapy Facility. "I became independent to a certain extent and I will become more independent."

He wasn’t going to let the accident affect his community involvement.

He continued to be a Boys and Girls Club Director, and also was involved in the Sheriff’s Booster Club.
