Foothill Fire 30% Contained....
Heavy winds extend fire to 2,800 acres in Placerita Canyon. Fire was 30% contained at 9:15pm. Mandatory evacuations of 100 homes took place in Placerita Canyon, from Sand Canyon to the 14. Red Cross set up the evacuation center at College of the Canyons in the Physical Education building, at Valencia Boulevard and Rockwell Canyon Road. Highway 14 closed from Via Princessa to highway 5, causing the 5 to back up heavily in both directions. Surface streets heading through the Newhall Pass also closed much of the afternoon--Sierra Highway was shut down from Via Princessa to highway 5. Wind blew most of the smoke into Canyon Country and on to Antelope Valley. Helicopters will be back on the scene at 7:00am to battle the blazes.
