Family Mourns Saugus Man
As family members mourned a 24-year-old Saugus man Monday, the suspect in his murder recovered at a local hospital from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head... “The suspect looks like he’s going to survive,” said sheriff’s Detective Donna Cheek. “We don’t know what state he’s going to be in when he wakes up, but he’s starting to respond a little bit.”
Robert Wheeler, 25, cannot be arrested or charged until doctors at Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital release him from their care. Deputies guard Wheeler’s room awaiting that moment, when they plan to arrest him as a suspect in a New Year’s Day shooting spree that left one man dead and two injured before he turned the gun on himself.
“He caused a lot of damage up there (in Santa Clarita),” said sheriff’s Lt. Jack Jordan, a homicide detective stationed in Los Angeles.
