Off-Duty Deputies Enforce Rules on Bus

The City of Santa Clarita is cracking down on teenage food-eaters and gum-chewers by using off-duty Sheriff's deputies....

In two recent cases, a teen was cited for sucking on a lollipop, and in another, a teen was asked to spit out her gum but was still cited.

Parents are infuriated because of the seemingly silly rules, but City spokeswoman Gail Ortiz says that the city spends nearly $75,000 per year on bus improvements.  A large percentage of regular bus riders includes junior high and high school students, the biggest culprits of chewing gum and causing damage.
