Drop, Cover and Hold April 17, 2007 at 9:05 AM
Taking proper actions during an earthquake can save lives and reduce injuries.
On April 17, 2007, at 9:05 a.m., the City extends an invitation to everyone in the community to practice preparedness by doing a Drop, Cover, and Hold drill, whether at work, home, or school.
During an earthquake, drop to the floor, take cover under a sturdy desk or table, and hold onto it firmly. Be prepared to move with the shaking. Hold the position until the ground stops shaking and it is safe to move. For this community drill, we encourage everyone to remain in the "Drop, Cover, and Hold" position for 30 seconds. In an actual earthquake event on the Santa Andreas fault, the reality may be three to four minutes.
To facilitate this drill at your location(s), the City suggests the following:
* Send an e-mail notification about the drill.
* Utilize an intercom system, if available, to announce the start of the drill.
* Listen to KHTS AM 1220 as the notification will be broadcast at 9:05 a.m. You may receive KHTS AM 1220 via live Internet stream.
The City is proclaiming April as Earthquake Preparedness month. Please promote and practice preparedness by participating in this drill. We realize that this date/time may not be the best for everyone, but we encourage your organization to consider doing a drill like this in the near future.
