County Funds Hiring of Deputies

Los Angeles County Supervisor Michael D. Antonovich issued the following statement to the Chief Administrative Officer's 2005-06 budget regarding the hiring of 1,200 deputies.

"This budget is a step in the right direction.  Adding over 1,200 Sheriff's deputies and other public safety enhancements overcomes the past failures when the Board did not support law enforcement needs.  With the Sheriff's Department forced to play catch up, the Board has directed the Sheriff to fastrack recruitment and training to fill the 1,214 sworn positions, including 103 deputies for Community Oriented Policing.  In addition, $18.3 million dollars has been earmarked to enhance unincorporated patrols and detectives.  However, the Sheriff must focus on recruitment -- he now has the resources to produce.

This budget also provides funds for the District Attorney to hire 18 Hardcore Gang prosecutors, $1.2 million dollars for school-based probation officers and adds nearly $300,000 dollars to the DISARM Program that confiscates weapons from convicted felons on probation.

Public safety has benefited from this year's budget as a direct result of the passage of Proposition 1A and "electionitis."

With two Supervisors running for reelection, we have gained the votes necessary to support these vital services.   In addition, California voters passed Proposition 1A, protecting local government dollars from the State legislature, and putting an end to the State robbing local resources."
