Congressional Art Winner Goes To Washington DC

Laura Peskay took her “Vintage Lady” to be displayed in Capitol Building

Recently, Laura Peskay took a trip of a lifetime to Washington DC to be honored for her artistic talent.

It all started a few months back when Peskay won first prize at a local Congressional Art competition. The competition was open to high school aged kids from around Santa Clarita. It was recently resurrected by Patricia McKeon, whose husband Buck is Santa Clarita’s congressional representative.

The nation-wide program allows each congressional district to pick a winning work of art each year, and the artist responsible for it, gets to travel to Washington DC to meet with their congressman, and to attend a special induction ceremony. This year, Peskay’s charcoal “Vintage Lady” took its spot alongside roughly 300 other works of art hanging in the Tunnel Gallery in the Capitol building from other young artists from around the United States. It will remain there for one year.

Southwest Airlines supplied the plane tickets for Peskay and her family to attend the ceremony.

Peskay joined KHTS for a special interview at the Community Resource Station when she returned from her trip. She said she was proud to represent Santa Clarita and to show that our city has talent.

Aside from seeing her artwork on display in the capitol building, Peskay also met with Buck McKeon, who has last year’s congressional art winning piece from Jordan Recchia hanging in his office.
