Congressional Art Winner For 2007
Laura Peskay’s “Vintage Lady” to be displayed in Washington DC.
A few weeks ago, local talent took the spotlight as young artists from Santa Clarita displayed their work for all to see, as part of the Citywide Youth Art Exhibit and Exchange.
Several high school students were also up for the High School Congressional Art Award, which will bring the winning piece and it’s creator to Washington DC.
This year, it was Laura Peskay who took the top prize, for her charcoal drawing “Vintage Lady.”
Her first reaction to winning was a little shocking. “I was surprised, there were so many other wonderful works here,” said Peskay. “It is an honor to show the Country what Santa Clarita and Newhall can do if they put their minds to it.”
Peskay, a Hart High Senior, will now travel to DC in June to join the all the other winners from the congressional districts across the Country. There, her piece will be unveiled and hung in the Capitol for one year.
While her winning drawing was a charcoal, she said that her favorite tools are color pencils.
Patricia McKeon and Jon Dell from KHTS joined SCV Arts’ Gloria Locke and Mayor Marsha McLean in judging the artwork.
Patricia McKeon began this project years ago; however Gloria Locke and KHTS owner Carl Goldman joined her in pushing for its recent resurgence.
Congressman Buck McKeon was also in attendance.
Second place went to Andrew Bang, for his “Crimson Rising.”
Third Place was a photograph by Nick Bales entitled “The Story.”
