COC Wins State Title
In the impenetrable thickness of the Tule Fog the College of the Canyons locked horns with the City College of San Francisco, akin to the Tule Elk of the region...
Though the deck was seemingly stacked against them, the Cougars emerged out of the fog as state champions.
Behind the efficient passing of Cory Miles the COC football program not only reached new heights, they reached the pinnacle.
Miles was on fire, throwing for 226 yards and three touchdowns to lift the Cougars to a 39-32 victory of City College of San Francisco in the California State Championship game Saturday afternoon under awful playing conditions at Redwood High School.
The victory capped off a perfect 14-0 season for the Cougars and gave the football program its first state championship.
According to COC head coach Chuck Lyon, the victory also propelled the Cougars to the JC Gridwire National Championship.
“I’m so proud of this team and this school. To win a national championship in our seventh year, that’s unbelievable,” Lyon said.
Miles overcame the fog to hit tight end Jason Lance from 15 and 26-yards in the first quarter and scored on a 1-yard touchdown to give the Cougars a 19-0 lead.
