COC Transfer Rates Highest In LA County

SANTA CLARITA - Recent research shows College of the Canyons

transfer rates are increasing and are among the highest in the state.

According to a May 2005 College of the Canyons "Research Brief," over the past six years, the transfer rate from College of the Canyons to UC schools has increased 88 percent and from College of the Canyons to CSU has increased 43 percent.

These students are continuing their educations at universities as prestigious as UCLA, UCSB and UCSD; Cal State schools, such as CSUN, SDSU and CSULB; and private and out of state schools, including Pepperdine University, University of Southern California, The Masters' College and Mount St. Mary's College, as stated in the research.

A report by The National Center for Public Policy and Higher Education shows the rate of transfers at College of the Canyons is the highest of the 21 colleges in Los Angeles County, and is in the top 14.5 percent of the 109 California Community Colleges.

Daylene Meuschke, Senior Research Analyst at College of the Canyons, said, "resources such as the Transfer Center, counseling office and articulation agreements between COC and various colleges and universities are available to help ensure transfer success from COC to UC and CSU schools. These, and various other programs, provide COC students with information and counseling about what classes are required to transfer to a specific four-year institution."

Those enrolled at College of the Canyons are able to work with a counselor and create an education plan that will ensure success of transferring.

"This allows students easy access to updated information," said Sue Bozman, College of the Canyons spokesperson.

A student at College of the Canyons can take classes and fulfill general education requirements, specific to his or her individual need, and then transfer to the college or university of choice.

As enrollment continues to increase, the number of students transferring will rise; College of the Canyons is continuing to make resources available to ease transferring.
