COC Theatre Production Class Will Present Showcase
Students will demonstrate their abilities at show.
Students enrolled in the first of two Summer Theatre 190 sessions at College of the Canyons will get a chance to demonstrate the fruits of their study as many of them appear in a series of Showcase Performances being held in the Black Box Theatre at the Santa Clarita Performing Arts Center at College of the Canyons on Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings, July 12-14 at 8pm.
A limited number of tickets are available to the general public for $10 each, $5 with a valid student identification.
Tickets will be purchased at the door and seating is first come first served.
These Summer Theatre courses were organized by Mark Salyer and Andrea Slominski, COC adjunct theatre instructors and Producing Artistic Directors of The Theatre Project/SCV, a professional theatre company that is providing a dynamic group of Master Teachers and Artist to augment this year’s program. As an Educational Sponsor of The Theatre Project/SCV, McDonald’s Restaurants of Santa Clarita has generously underwritten a portion of the cost.
“We are so appreciative of the contribution of McDonald’s. Because of their generosity, we’ve been able to bring amazing teachers to COC and the community as well,” says Salyer.
The two five-week long sessions are offering classes that focus on everything from voice and movement to learning the business of agents, casting and cold reads. Supplemental workshops are being led by such internationally-known experts as Jean-Louis Rodrigue (Alexander Technique), Will Kilroy (The Michael Chekov technique); voice therapist Joanna Cazden (vocal training); and Rene Urbanovich, Broadway performer Julia Gregory, and opera singer Carmen Tejada (musical performance). Acting workshops are taught by actor and Broadway director Tony Abatemarco, Kate Steele, Susan Hinshaw, Mark Salyer and Andrea Slominski, among others. Annie Schwartz of Origin Talent gives a workshop on The Role of The Agent, and Emmy Award-winning actress Kathleen Noone conducts a workshop on personal development in the entertainment business.
Both sessions culminate with a showcase production, featuring the students’ work.
“This first showcase series features three different nights of scenes, monologues and songs. These students have been so inspired, they have brought over 50 different pieces to the table in three weeks of work, “Slominski adds.
