City Sales Tax Numbers Up For 2nd Quarter

The City of Santa Clarita’s sales tax figures for the second quarter of 2006 were released this week and have increased 3.3% over the same period in 2005, with the largest gain in business-to-business sales which posted a 16% increase.

The City of Santa Clarita continues to outpace the region in overall sales tax increases, gaining 4.2% in transportation and over two percent in general retail sales.  Construction sales however show a 5% decline in the second quarter of 2006, compared with the same period in 2005, most likely attributable to a slow down in home sales.

The second quarter covers the months of April through June.  Not surprisingly, service stations posted a 38.5% gain during this quarter, reflecting the increase in consumer gasoline prices at the pump.

Strong sales continue in Santa Clarita for department stores which show a 7.7% increase; recreation products which show an 8.1% increase, as well as office equipment and leasing posting a 23.1% and 28.4 % increase respectively.

“Santa Clarita continues to show a healthy financial climate, with strong sales across the board, the lowest unemployment rate in the County at 2.8% and continually low vacancy rates,” commented Darren Hernandez, the City’s Treasurer and Director of Administrative Services.
