City Puts Call Out For Artists

Old Town Newhall Trash Cans Turned Into Art
The City of Santa Clarita and the Santa Clarita Arts Advisory Committee (SCAAC) are commissioning artwork for the Old Town Newhall “Art on the Trash Can Project.” A total of ten artists or groups of artists will be selected to create artwork on a 55-gallon metal trash receptacle to be displayed in Old Town Newhall. The postmark deadline for artist applications is June 1, 2006.Part of City’s Art in Public Places Program, the completed works will be placed along San Fernando Road, between Lyons Avenue and 5th Street during the month of October. The finished pieces will be beautiful as well as functional, serving their purpose as trash receptacles and art pieces in tandem. The City is currently accepting applications from all interested artists. Groups of artists are also welcome to apply. The “Art on the Trash Can Project” offers artists two different theme categories to base their content upon. The first theme is “The History of Santa Clarita,” and the second is “The Street as an Art Gallery.” All selected artists will be awarded $500, a portion of which must be used for all materials required for their piece.

“The City hopes to provide artists with a new forum to display their talents as well as great public art pieces for the entire community to enjoy,” said Michael Marks, WHO for the City, and project coordinator. “We will officially welcome these pieces to our community during the Santa Clarita Street Art Festival this fall and we very much look forward to seeing what our local artists can create.” All proposals will be evaluated by members of the Old Town Newhall Association and the Downtown Main Street Association for recommendation to the official Artist Selection Panel. Decisions will be made and artists notified by July 2006.
