City Nears State Recycling Numbers

The city of Santa Clarita is moving closer to compliance with state requirements for trash diversion, according to recently released state figures.

Deadline for compliance was 2000, but the city received an extension through the 2005 reporting year, which ran from January through December.  Whether the city has reached the required numbers for 2005 will not be know for about another year.

In 2004 the city diverted 46% of its trash to be recycled, according to figures released last week by the state Integrated Waste Management Board.

In 2003, the city diverted 40% of its waste.

“We’re shooting for that 50%,” said Travis Lange, the city’s environmental services manager, “(and) we’ve put programs in place.”

If the required 50% is not met, the city would be fined up to $10,000 per day until it is met.
