City to Begin Christmas Tree Recycling Service

With the holiday season wrapping up, the Environmental Services department is encouraging Santa Clarita residents to plant their Christmas trees — at the curb. Until Jan. 14, Blue Barrel Disposal will be collecting Christmas trees for recycling, gathering and grinding them into mulch. The pickups are being done along with regular trash and recycling pickups. The trees must be placed curbside unflocked, undecorated and without a stand. There is no additional cost for the tree pickup service. Environmental Analyst Ben Lucha said the pickups are conducted every year, and last year collected about 265 tons of Christmas trees. It’s not only trees the city is recommending residents recycle. With the latest electronic gadgets a popular gift choice, residents are winding up with outdated or unwanted items in their house. Rather than relegating those items to a dusty corner of the garage or simply pitching them in the trash, residents of the city and unincorporated Los Angeles county communities can schedule a free pickup of so-called e-waste. The pickups are being done by Curbside Inc. on a first-come, first-serve basis, and will continue until the allotted funds have been exhausted. The program is funded by a grant from the state Integrated Waste Management Board. E-waste includes computers, entertainment electronics, mobile phones and other items that have been discarded by their original users. In most cases it consists of expensive and relatively durable products used for data processing, telecommunications or entertainment.  As some electronic equipment often contains amounts of mercury and other toxic materials, rather than have it go into the trash the city encourages recycling.“(We) would like to encourage everyone to try at least one of these waste-reducing efforts during the holiday season,” said Travis Lange, Santa Clarita’s environmental services manager in a statement. “Not only will it prevent excess waste from going into our landfills, but it will help to preserve some of our precious resources.”
