Carjackers Coming to the SCV
Six carjackings or attempted carjackings within the past two months that have put three local residents in the hospital were random crimes by opportunists, and the inevitable result of Santa Clarita Valley growth, a sheriff’s detective said Tuesday...
“Never has it been this bad,” said Sgt. Howard Fairchild, who arrived at the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station in 1988.
“We’ve had a big surge in street robberies and carjackings. (In previous years), if we got two or three in Santa Clarita, we were (angry),” Fairchild said. “Now we’re getting a couple a month. I think the crooks have discovered this area.”
Suspects attacked two of the victims at their homes in Valencia and Canyon Country; one in a Newhall parking lot; one at the Valencia Town Center mall; and two others at the Hilton and the Power Dodge car dealership in Valencia.
A victim in Canyon Country was shot when a carjacker tried to take his car from his home Saturday. A woman was raped when a man forced his way into her car at a Newhall fast-food restaurant. And a Valencia man was beaten and suffered broken ribs when a carjacker grappled with him for his keys.
Fairchild said the carjackers were primarily criminal opportunists from outside the valley who did not arrive with the specific intent to carjack anyone.
Los Angeles Police Department officers found two of the stolen cars and arrested two of the suspects in South Central Los Angeles.
Fairchild said the recent surge in criminals from elsewhere targeting the Santa Clarita Valley is partially attributable to the SCV’s growth.
