Canyon High Field Debuts Tonight

Part of a string of renovation throughout the high schools in the Hart District, Canyon High opens their season and their new field tonight....

Canyon is the first to open their new synthetic turf stadium, which will be followed by Valencia's scheduled opening on Septermber 23rd, with Hart and Saugus Stadiums to follow at another time during the season.

Canyon Varsity Coach Harry Welch says the new turf is advantageous because it doesn't get torn up as easily as grass does, with the amount of use that is planned on the fields.  The main disadvantage is that the turf absorbs heat a lot more.

While some are impatient with the fact that the other fields are not done yet, most people, including Saugus head coach Jason Bornn, are making the best of it.

The funding for renovating the facilities, $14 million comes from Measure B funds, and are welcomed by many, especially those who have been working at the schools for decades.
