California May Vote On Iraq

State legislature passes bill that puts troop withdrawal on the ballot

State lawmakers have passed a bill that, if signed by Governor Schwarzenegger would put a question on the next California election ballot. That question would be asking the California voting public whether or not the US should withdraw troops from Iraq.

The bill is non-binding; however, the Democrats who supported it say that it will send a message to President Bush.

Republicans, who strongly opposed the bill, said that it does indeed send a message, but not to President Bush. Instead, they say, it sends a bad message to the troops.

But even without Republican support the bill passed easily through the Assembly and Senate, and it is now on to the Governor’s desk. So far, Governor Schwarzenegger is keeping his mouth shut over whether he’ll sign it or not.
