Blue Barrel Recycling Program Raises Over $31,000 for Santa Clarita Schools

Over 17,000 students from 4 local elementary school districts participated in the Second Annual 2004 Blue Barrel Disposal Total Trash Out recycling contest, raising over $31,000 for Santa Clarita Valley schools.

Over 17,000 students from 4 local elementary school districts participated in the Second Annual 2004 Blue Barrel Disposal Total Trash Out recycling contest, raising over $31,000 for Santa Clarita Valley schools.  Total Trash Out is an aluminum can collection contest between local schools that helps raise money by giving all funds raised by the program directly to each participating school.  The program also teaches local children about the importance of recycling and promotes a clean environment.

This year the participating schools collected a total of 24,940 lbs.  The two grand prize winners of the contest are Plum Canyon Elementary collecting the most pounds of aluminum overall, with a total of 2,709 lbs. and Northlake Hills Elementary collecting the most pounds of aluminum per student, each student collecting an average of 3.22 lbs.

"In its first year, Total Trash Out proved to be a huge success in Santa Clarita schools, raising more than $17,000 in 2003,” said Amy Wiese, Blue Barrel Recycling Coordinator.  “Through this joint effort with students, teachers, parents and neighbors, Total Trash Out not only benefits students and schools, it benefits the entire community."

The winning schools will receive a lunch party, a gift certificate to the ValenciaTownCenter mall as well as the Staples Office Supply Store, pencils with their School’s name on them and tickets for all students to go to MountasiaFamilyFunCenter.  Classrooms within the winning schools that collected the largest amount of aluminum cans will also receive tickets to MagicMountain.

“Waste Management is committed to promoting recycling in the communities it serves,” continued Wiese.  “Through the Total Trash Out program, Waste Management is able to help raise funds for local schools, while also teaching students about the benefits of recycling.”

The Blue Barrel Disposal Total Trash Out program is generously supported by sponsors including the City of Santa Clarita, Six Flags Magic Mountain, Mountasia, The Signal, Comcast Spotlight, Alameda Metals, The Magazine of Santa Clarita, Valencia Town Center, The Hyatt, KHTS Radio, Santa Clarita Valley Living Magazine, Difatta Graphics, Salt Creek Grille, Valencia Acura, Newhall Land, High Impact Visual Marketing, Bernards Bros., Fairway Commercial Partners, Andy Gump and Anna Ott in Memory of Randy Ott.
