Barbershop Contest Hits High Note

ImageLocal High Schools Compete In Harmony.

The 8th Annual Youth Quartet Contest unfolded Monday night in front of a packed hall at a local Santa Clarita church.

There were five groups in all, and three of them were local, with a girls group called the Trouble Clefs from Canyon High, The Shop Girls from Valencia High, and boy group The Fantastic Sams, also from Valencia.

A group from the San Fernando Valley called Razz Ma Tazz and another from Newberry Park High named Tacky were also competing.

Opening the night were some long time barbershoppers, who set the tone for what proved to be a very enjoyable evening.

Each group sang two songs and mixed their vocal talent and precision with a good dose of comedy and showmanship.

“In barbershop, we don’t sing, we entertain,” said the MC on the night.

It may have been a High School competition, but the quality of the singing did not sound amateur.

After the judging panel added up their votes, Razz Ma Tazz took 1st place, repeating their feat from last year. Valencia’s The Shop Girls landed second, and Canyon’s Trouble Clefs came in at third.
