Awards to Honor Local Advertising Excellence
Creative genius. Intense competition. Gold statues. The Oscars? Nope, it’s the ADDYs. Sponsored by the American Advertising Federation, the ADDY Awards are the world’s largest and arguably toughest advertising competition. And, for the first time ever, they’re coming to Santa Clarita, thanks to a newly formed professional group for those in the advertising industry. Formed in January, Advertising Professionals of North Los Angeles County (AdPros) is among the newest of the AAF’s 210 local affiliate chapters.
“We’re the premier professional organization for anyone involved with creating, buying or selling advertising,” said AdPros President Gary Jacobs, who serves as Creative Director of Jacobs Creative Design. “That includes graphic designers, photographers, printers, ad reps, agency staffers, in-house creative teams, media buyers, copywriters, direct mail companies or any other job that’s connected to the industry.” Each AAF chapter administers a local awards program and the winners advance to one of 14 regional competitions. Regional winners move on to the national/international finals. AdPros will host its awards celebration Sunday, April 2, at Hyatt Valencia to crown the winners of the local competition. Viewing of the entries begins at 5:30 p.m. and dinner and the awards presentation gets underway at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $60 per person in advance or $70 at the door. Gold, Silver and Bronze Awards are given in 75 categories covering the spectrum of advertising mediums, including newspaper, radio, magazine, television, direct mail, and the Internet.
“The awards alert the business community about the extraordinary and dedicated firms who can help them grow their businesses,” Will Sherwood, principal of The Sherwood Group, and AdPros’ awards committee chairman. “Whenever a company in our community wants effective results for their corporate identity, literature systems, annual reports, advertising, brochures, and websites, they need look no further than the winners in this competition. Each of them can convincingly communicate the benefits of a company's products or services. They can combine striking visual images with compelling copy that captures attention, inspires imagination, sustains customer loyalty, and sells.” Although AdPros is new to Santa Clarita, its members are not. Formerly known as the Graphic Arts Professionals (GAP), they were affiliated for the last 15 years with IAPHC – the Graphic Professionals Resource Network, a group focused on printing services. But the GAP members dropped that affiliation and instead aligned themselves with AAF to better reflect the services they offer.
AdPros serves the Santa Clarita and Antelope Valleys, as well as the northern San Fernando Valley and Agoura, Thousand Oaks, and Westlake Village. The group meets at noon on the third Friday of every month at Salt Creek Grille, and visitors are always welcome. As the “Unifying Voice for Advertising,” the American Advertising Federation (AAF), headquartered in Washington, D.C., is the trade association that represents 50,000 professionals in the advertising industry.
