Athletic Club Appeals To Save Sign

The Santa Clarita Planning Commission is expected to flex some municipal muscle at Tuesday’s meeting, when the Santa Clarita Athletic Club brings an appeal regarding its Wiley Canyon Road sign before the commission...

As part of the city’s enforcement of current sign ordinances, the athletic club was presented in April with a notice to remove the nonconforming sign.
The current sign ordinance allows for signs up to 35 feet high with a 200-square-foot surface space. The athletic club’s Newhall sign, which was erected prior to the current ordinance and dates to the property’s days as a car dealership, is 39 feet high and 473 square feet. It also utilizes a lighted text-message screen to advertise to passing motorists on adjacent Interstate 5.
Some residents have referred to the sign as a blight to the area, while the athletic club owners contend it is a landmark and crucial to their business.
When property owners receive a 30-day notice regarding an offending sign they can either take it down or file an appeal with the Planning Commission. If the appeal is denied, they may file an appeal with the City Council.
City staff is expected to recommend that the Planning Commission deny the appeal at Tuesday’s meeting.
