Antonovich Secures $2 Million Dollars for Emancipated Foster Youth Services
THP-Plus Gets $ 2 Million Dollars From the State
At the request of Supervisor Michael D. Antonovich, Governor Schwarzenegger has allocated nearly $2 million State dollars to expand the State’s Transitional Housing Program Plus (THP-Plus), a supportive housing services to emancipated youth ages 18 to 24 in Los Angeles County
“Allowing young people to emancipate without the necessary support is another form of abuse. Too often, youth emancipate without the basics: a place to live, a job, a high school diploma or the support of a caring adult. Many will become uninsured, unemployed, incarcerated and/or homeless,” said Supervisor Antonovich.
“This action is step forward in helping the nearly 1500 Los Angeles County youth who emancipate from foster care annually to achieve their potential through stable housing, higher education, and employment.”
Since 1998, there has been a 25% overall reduction in the number of children and youth in foster care in California. However, despite the reduction the number of youth annually emancipating statewide has grown by 38%. THP-Plus participants are two times more likely to complete high school, three times less likely to become incarcerated and four times less likely to experience homelessness.
