Antonovich Lone Dissenter In Power Vote

Image Casting the lone dissenting vote, Los Angeles County Supervisor Michael D. Antonovich reacted to the Board’s action amending the County Code and Charter to shift accountability to the appointed Chief Administrative Officer:

“Hundreds of years ago, the Boston Tea Party took place in revolt of the King’s rule.  The result was a change from a monarchy to a democratic government.  Later, De Tocqueville observed that the beauty of the United States Government was its representative democracy.

Los Angeles County’s current structure already provides the CAO with authority and oversight of the department heads and support open government by allowing those elected by the people to discuss, in an open forum, problems, concerns and solutions.

Today, the Board of Supervisors took a step backward by amending the County Code and Charter to shift accountability from the elected Board of Supervisors to the appointed Chief Administrative Officer.  This action places blind faith in an autocratic form of government.

The citizens elected their representatives to be accountable and oversee the county bureaucracy.  The Board’s action turns back the clock and replaces representative government with a non-elected puppet.  It is especially impacting the 1.3 million residents of the unincorporated communities where the Board of Supervisors is their elected Mayor.”
