12th Annual River Rally Cleanup and Environmental Expo

Hosted by the City of Santa Clarita

The City of Santa Clarita takes pride in keeping our community clean and beautiful, especially the portion of the Santa Clara River that runs through the heart of the valley. On Saturday, September 30, 2006, the City will host its 12th Annual River Rally Clean Up and Environmental Expo, at the Newhall Community Center, located at 22421 Market Street, from 8 a.m. to 12 noon.

River Rally was designed to clean a portion of Newhall Creek, a tributary of the Santa Clara River, one of the last natural rivers in Southern California,” said Travis Lange, Environmental Service Manager for the City. “We aim to preserve the quality of the river while bringing residents of the Santa Clarita Valley community together for a fun day.”
The clean up is a great opportunity to for those seeking volunteer work. It is a popular destination for clubs, organizations, students, scout troops and families. Pre-registration for volunteers and guests is not needed to attend.

The Expo will feature more than 25 environmental exhibitors and vendors that will distribute giveaways and feature information on recycling, air quality, pollution prevention, open space preservation and wildlife conservation. There will also be designated arts and crafts areas, bucket truck rides and a special appearance by “C.O.R.E.Y” the City’s Environmental Services mascot. This year’s River Rally efforts hope to help preserve the quality of the Santa Clara River for this season and the seasons to come. A total of 117 tons of trash and debris have been collected since the River Rally event first began.

River Rally is held as a part of National Pollution Roundtable Week and the California Coastal Cleanup Day, and is funded in part through a U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Trustee Council Grant.
