11th Annual Californina ON-LOCATION Awards
Five production companies that chose the Santa Clarita Valley as the setting for their feature films, commercials and television programs will be recognized at the 2005 California On-Location Awards (COLAs) on Sunday, October 23, 2005 at the Los Angeles Marriott Downtown. The COLAs acknowledge the efforts and professionalism of locations departments, which are responsible for scouting areas, identifying and managing locations and serving as the liaison to the local community while filming. “The City congratulates those productions recognized at the COLAs on their finalist status,” said City of Santa Clarita Mayor Cameron Smyth. “We are very proud of the valley’s rich film history and are pleased to have productions that are recognized as professional and community-minded filming here,” Smyth added. The five finalists nominated for filming in the Santa Clarita Valley are being recognized in four different categories. These include: Production Company of the Year, Features – Herbie: Fully Loaded. Herbie: Fully Loaded stars Lindsay Lohan and was filmed in part in the Agua Dulce area of the Santa Clarita Valley. Production Company of the Year, Television – Deadwood. Deadwood which airs on HBO, is based at Melody Ranch Studios. Production Company of the Year, Television – 24. 24, which stars Kiefer Sutherland, films frequently in the Santa Clarita Valley. Location Manager of the Year, Television – Paul Wilson, CSI. CSI, which airs on CBS, frequently shoots on location in and around the Santa Clarita Valley and is the #1 drama on television. Production Company of the Year, Commercials – MJZ. MJZ produced an Anti-smoking Pubic Service Announcement in Santa Clarita.
The five nominations at this year’s COLAs further support the Santa Clarita Valley’s status as one of California’s most sought-after destinations for filming. The Santa Clarita Film Office reports a 23 percent increase in the number of film permits issued in the first quarter of the 2005-06 fiscal year, when compared with the same period in 2004-05. Eighty permits were issued from July through September 2005, while 65 permits were issued during this same time frame in 2004. The City of Santa Clarita’s Film Office was created in 2002 to help attract and retain filming in the Santa Clarita Valley. The office currently issues permits for all filming within the city, which provides increased revenue for city programs, jobs for residents and ensures a minimal impact for residents and visitors.
