Congressional Art Competition Open To High School Students

Prestigious competition seeks entries, local Congressman encourages artists.

Sponsored By:

Albert Einstein Academy

The halls of Congress need a little patriotic art and Representative Buck McKeon thinks local high school students can come up with the perfect picture.

McKeon and KHTS AM-1220 are sponsoring the 2009 Congressional Art Competition for students in grades 9 through 12 who live in the 25th District and attend high schools, both public and private as well as home-schooled students of the appropriate age.

Art teachers are encouraged to get their students to start painting and drawing for their works to be entered in this prestigious competition. This year's theme is "Patriotic" and the contest will be held in the spring.

Previous winners have included yeon Whan Yoon from Hart High School, Marissa Embola from Saugus High School, Jordan Recchia from Valencia High School and Laura Peskay from Hart High School.

Complete guidelines are available here , but here are the basics: artwork must be original, two-dimensional and cannot be larger than 30 inches high, 30 inches wide and four inches deep, framed.

Artwork categories include: paintings (oil, acrylics, watercolors); drawings (pastels, colored pencil, pencil, charcoal, ink and markers); collage; prints (lithographs, silkscreen, block prints); mixed media; computer-generated art and photography.

The deadline to turn in all artwork is Wednesday, May 6. Entries may be dropped off at Congressman Buck McKeon's office at 26650 The Old Road, Suite 203, Valencia, or at the KHTS AM-1220 studios at 27225 Camp Plenty Road, Suite 8, Canyon Country. Entries will be judged at 4 p.m. Monday, May 11, 2009 at FASTFRAME, (Fast Frame) 24204 Valencia Blvd. (in the Kohl's and Whole Foods Shopping Center).

If selected, the piece will hang in the Cannon Tunnel of the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C. from July 2009 to July 2010.

Forms and more information are available by contacting McKeon’s office at (661) 254-2111.
