City Of Santa Clarita Teams Up with Hart School District To Encourage Recycling

The City of Santa Clarita, in partnership with the William S. Hart Union High School District, kicked off a student-driven recycling campaign during the 2012-2013 school year encouraging youth to recycle bottles and cans on campus for the benefit of programs at their schools.  The recycling program is off to a great start this year and will continue throughout the duration of the 2013-2014 school year with schools competing for the top honor against other schools in the district.

The City applied for and received funding from a State of California (CalRecycle) Beverage Container Recycling grant to assist with the purchase of recycling containers, which were distributed to all junior high and high schools in the Hart District.  Student groups were asked to decorate the containers and find fun ways to encourage the student body to recycle glass, plastic and aluminum in designated containers.  Each school will then turn in the items for cash, which will be used to support clubs and other student programs on campus.

Currently, Hart High School has collected the most recyclables with approximately 866 pounds.  The school kicked off the program and plans are to use the collected money to support associated student body events and programs benefitting all students.  Golden Valley High School is a close second with 654 pounds collected to date.

“A lot of materials don’t get recycled in schools, which causes a large amount of waste.  This program encourages healthy competition between our schools and is a great way to help students make a positive impact while earning money for programs on campus,” stated Mayor Bob Kellar.

In addition to the City’s partnership with the William S. Hart Union High School District, other organizations supporting this campaign include the State of California (CalRecycle), Los Angeles Conservation Corps, and Consolidated Disposal Services.

Schools in the William S. Hart Union High School District participating in the recycling competition include: Bowman, Canyon, Golden Valley, Hart, Saugus, Valencia and West Ranch High Schools; and Arroyo Seco, La Mesa, Placerita, Rancho Pico, Rio Norte and Sierra Vista Junior High Schools.
