Canyon High Lends Vocal Talents To Valentines Day Bidders
Singing telegrams are a popular fundraiser for the choir program.
This year, while many of us will be worried about flowers, oversized stuffed teddy bears and convenient store chocolate boxes, a select few will rest in the peace of mind that they’ve hired the Canyon High School Madrigals to sing to their beloved one.
By far one of the most unique gifts in Santa Clarita, the Canyon High School choir has been specializing in singing telegrams for years.
It all started back in the mid 80’s, where choir students started selling their services on Valentines Day. When a student would fork over few bucks, they would be assured that their loved one would get a piece of candy and sweet song. Come that magical day, the Madrigals went to work, traveling from class to class, singing to whomever they were directed.
That tradition is still alive and well at Canyon High, however, about seven years ago they expanded the service community wide.
Now, anyone can pay for the Madrigals to come wherever they are, and give a short vocal performance.
According to Choir Director Mary Purdy, the traveling Madrigals sing two songs, one short and sweet, the other more involved.
For $100 the Madrigals can make a stop for you, as they will be out and about February 13th and 14th. They come dressed in gowns and tuxedos.
“If you want to have something special done for your significant other on Valentine’s Day this is for you,” said Purdy.
The money raised will go to benefit the choir’s upcoming trip to Washington DC, purchase new uniforms, and explore new music.
Last year alone, the Madrigals performed 433 singing telegrams at Canyon High, and 34 out in the community.
New this year, are opportunities for local businesses to sponsor a special Madrigal concert on February 13th. A $100 donation will sponsor the choir as they travel to Sunrise Assisted Living at Sterling Canyon, where they will dazzle the residents with a free concert.
