Bowman High School Poets, Artists In Festival Spotlight

Friday morning festival open to the public.

Cloyd Construction

Student artists and poets from Bowman High School will be in the spotlight Friday morning, May 16, when the school presents its annual Day of the Artist and Poet Festival. The event begins with an art exhibit in the campus quad at 9:15 a.m., and poetry readings start at 9:30 a.m.

More than 90 poets and their poems are featured in the school’s literary magazine, “The Phoenix,” and many will be read by their authors at the festival. Special guest will be Richard Weekley, who created Bowman’s literary magazine and launched the first Day of the Artist and Poet Festival 15 years ago. He retired this year from his position as an English teacher at Bowman.

Guest alumni poets also have been invited to attend, along with family and friends of this year’s presenting poets and artists. This year’s festival is a collaboration of Bowman’s creative writing program and Art Department and will be hosted by poetry teacher Mike Mansfield and art teacher Mary Gaskin.

Copies of “The Phoenix” will be available for $1. The public is invited to attend.
