Deputies Nab Citibank Robber

The man who Sheriff’s Deputies believe robbed the Citibank on Lyons Avenue on December 4th is in custody today, thanks to his prompt reporting to his probation officer.


Barbershop Quartet Competition Coming To SCV

On February 26th, at the Santa Clarita United Methodist Church, harmony will be the rule of the evening. The 8th annual High School Barbershop Quartet Contest will take over the night, and if history is any indicator, it should deliver the kind of entertainment value you very rarely get to see.

Barbershop singing is complicated enough to begin with. Difficult harmonies and incredible timing make the show a real treat to the senses, and when you throw a competition into the mix, well, you’ve got a show.

Local Mardi Gras Party Approaching

On Friday, Feb. 9, from 6 p.m.-10 p.m at the Valencia Country Club, guests will enjoy an authentic Cajun feast, casino tables, live jazz and dancing at a New Orleans-style event and fundraiser for the Foundation for Children's Dental Health. 

Mardi Gras-style décor, including beads and masks, will be available at the ball.

Woman Dies In Apartment Fire

Wednesday night, a fire broke out at the Terrace Apartments, leaving one woman dead.

According to Stephanie English of the Los Angeles County Fire Department, the blaze began in the garage, and most of the significant damage was there. That is where the body of the woman was found.

Sheriff’s and Fire Department officials are investigating the cause of the fire.

Five engine companies were on scene, bringing with them over thirty firefighters. While they knocked down the fire quickly, it was not in enough time to prevent the fatality.

Local Girl Wins Boxing World Championship

The City of Santa Clarita is proud to welcome home International Boxing Champion Marlene Castro, who competed in the Zeta Enterprise Boxing Tournament  in San Juan, Puerto Rico, on Sunday, January 13, 2007.

 “It is an honor to have someone from our City internationally represent the Santa Clarita Community Center in the sport of Boxing,” commented Mayor Marsha McLean.  “It is a tremendous achievement to be named an international champion and we commend Marlene on her win,” she added.

District Extends Apology Over Recruiter Incident

This morning, the William S. Hart School District extended an apology to Bret and Linda Greening, the two parents who were unhappy that an Air Force recruiter came to speak in their son’s Graphic Arts class without their knowledge.


The Greening’s son is only 14 years old, and they did not see how a Military recruiter’s talking to a Graphic Arts class could benefit the learning process.

Antonovich Offers Rewards Regarding SCV Hate Crimes

The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors approved Supervisor Antonovich’s motion to extend two $10,000 reward motions for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for the hate crimes committed in the Santa Clarita Valley on Saturday, November 4th, 2006.

Sheriff’s deputies discovered obscenities spray-painted on a vehicle belonging to a Jewish family, including the word “Jews” and also discovered two swastikas spray-painted on a campus putting green at the Master’s College, a Christian liberal arts college.


Teacher Fair Set For March 10th

Credentialed teachers interested in a position with five local school districts are invited to attend the annual Teacher Recruitment Fair planned for March 10 at Rancho Pico Junior High School. There will also be workshops for prospective teachers who need information on earning their college degrees and credentials.


Lockheed Player Of The Week - Ryan Kuhn

Congratulations, Ryan Kuhn of Canyon High School for being “Players of the Week” – January 23, 2007. 

Kuhn, senior guard, had 13 points in the Cowboys loss to Hart High on Tuesday, but he followed that with 18 points in their win over Golden Valley High on Friday.
