The defending State Football Champion Canyon Cowboys Head Coach Chris Varner has announced the firing of John DiLuigi as Defensive Coordinator.  DiLuigi was in his second season as the coordinator, and fifth season as a Cowboys coach.  Varner will take over the defense for the remainder of the season.  John had already planned to move on after the season so he could follow the career of his son J.J., a freshman running back at BYU.  J.J. is Canyons all-time rushing leader.

LOS ANGELES -- Manager Grady Little and the Dodgers ended a month of intrigue Tuesday by mutually parting company with a year left on his contract, presumably paving the way for the pursuit of former Yankees manager Joe Torre as his replacement.

Horses, dogs attacked in Canyon Country

KHTS first reported alleged Mountain Lion Attacks in Canyon Country after two horses on the same property were attacked. Both survived, however their injuries appeared to be from a large cat, not a more common area predator such as a coyote.

Gathered at the Hyatt Valencia, dressed in formal attire, attendees honored local leaders for their contribution to our community, during the 2nd Annual Leaders of Character Recognition Dinner last Saturday.  All honorees were chosen because they have exemplified characteristics of the Boy Scout Law: helpfulness, kindness, courage, and reverence, among many others. 

 

CHP Hoping To Avoid A Real Halloween Nightmare

Drunk Driving enforcement will be in place for Halloween weekend

As Halloween takes over the night life here in Santa Clarita and beyond, local law enforcement is hoping that people will be responsible in their celebrations.

 

Just like with most holidays, Halloween poses a substantial risk of drunk drivers. Last year alone, 1,258 people were arrested on drunk driving charges in California over the course of the weekend just before Halloween. 

 

Updates On Santa Clarita Fires

Updated Tuesday 11:33 a.m.

 

There are currently 85 firefighters and support personnel assigned to the fire, including 2 crews, 5 engines and 3 helicopters. 

 

Yesterday, crews spent most of their time constructing fire lines, and mopping up hot spots in the western finger of the Ranch Fire. The initial cause of the fire is still under investigation. 

 

Lockheed Player Of The Week - Ryan Zirbel

Saugus High Junior running back Ryan Zirbel is this week’s Lockheed Player Of The Week.  Ryan rushed for 378 yards and five touchdowns last Friday evening in a 70-27 defeat of the Golden Valley Grizzlies.  Congratulations to Ryan.

Hometown Sports Report 10-30-07

The last week of Foothill League Girls Volleyball is upon us.  The Foothill League Champion Valencia Vikings look to improve to 9-0 in league against the West Ranch Wildcats tonight.  The Hart Indians play the Saugus Centurions, while the Canyon Cowboys take on the Golden Valley Grizzlies.  All three games start at 5:15pm.

 

Santa Clarita Fire Updates

Updated Monday, October 29th at 11:54am

 

Current containment numbers on the Ranch (Castaic) Fire:

 

58,401 acres burned, 97% containment.  Officials now expecting full containment on October 30th.

  

The weekend weather was favorable for firefighters, with cloudy skies and even some sprinkles falling throughout the area on Saturday. 

 

Vasquez Bridge is closed due to fires : The County is estimating that the bridge will be re-opened by November 12th.
