    Santa Clarita’s unemployment among the lowest of similar-sized Southern California cities.

    Santa Clarita’s jobless rate rose slightly between June and July, while the county’s unemployment rate dropped over the same period due to seasonal hiring trends, the Employment Department reported Friday.
    Over the month, Santa Clarita posted the lowest rate among the similar-sized Southern California cities that The Signal compares on a monthly basis.

    EDWARDS AIR FORCE BASE — The space shuttle Discovery left Edwards Air Force Base on Friday for a multiple-leg trip back to its Florida home, drawing a sprinkling of spectators to the High Desert for its sendoff.

    Sales tax figures for the first quarter of 2005 (January through March, 2005) have been calculated and the City of Santa Clarita is reporting an overall increase of 2.6% over the same period one year earlier.
