    COC Instructor to Spend Year in Iraq

    After 32 years of fighting fires in southern California and another seven teaching the trade to both active-duty and aspiring firefighters at College of the Canyons, Steve Dixon, chair of the college’s Fire Technology Department, is ready to take on the challenge of spending a year in Iraq as fire chief at a military base.


     

    Small Fire Gives Hope for Summer

    A small blaze broke out off the Southbound lanes of Interstate 5 near Templin Highway at 11:20 a.m....  The fire was so small it only burned about 600 square feet....

    Fire officials said that even through the recent hot weather has elevated the fire danger throughout the SCV, nighttime humidity has been very high, partly because of the leftover moisture from the record-breaking winter rains.

    Herrick Commits to Mississippi

    Valencia High quarterback Michael Herric has verbally committed to play college football at the University of Mississippi.


    Herrick is a first-team all-CIF selection and the Foothill League Co-Player of the Year in 2004.


    Herric wanted to commit early, as he enters his senior year with the Vikings' chance to repeat as Foothill League champions.

    One Lane of Grapevine Closed Tuesday Morning

    The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) will close one lane of northbound I-5 from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m.Tuesday, July 12 from Fort Tejon to Grapevine to complete clean-up caused by a recent overturned big-rig hauling jet-fuel spill.


    Caltrans reminds motorists fines are doubled in work zones.

    A local skateboarder turned pro was among those invited to compete in an inaugural contest marking the launch of a new surf & skate store in Stevenson Ranch Sunday.

    "It's unreal," said Justin Eldridge, of Saugus.  "I wake up every day & I can't believe I'm doing what I want to do."

    Crews Contain Blaze Near

    About 75 firefighters quickly snuffed out a small blaze Sunday afternoon along the 5 freeway south of Templin Highway that was sparked by a vehicle fire.

    The five-acre burn, reported at 4:06pm, was completely controlled @ 40 minutes later, an official said.

    City Plans to Cut Field Services Department

    The city of Santa Clarita's eliminating its Field Services department effective Sept. 1 in a bid to streamline operations & save almost $300,000 a year.

    The department will disappear following the departure of former Field Services Director Chris Daste, who left Santa Clarita last month for a job in Elk Grove.
