Santa Clarita Deputies Take Look At Homeless Encampments

Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station deputies swept through the wash of the Santa Clara River recently as part of an effort to police areas frequented by the Santa Clarita Valley’s homeless population. The effort was aimed at directing the homeless population toward available services in response to concerns about illegal activity in that area, where there tends to be a higher prevalence of the homeless, officials said. On Thursday, during daytime hours, a collaborative law enforcement team led by Community Oriented Policing Services, or COPS, Bureau deputies worked collectively to police the riverbed environment throughout the area northwest of the Valencia Boulevard and Bouquet Canyon Road Intersection.

Feds Say Powerhouse Fire Caused By Downed Power Lines

More than one year after dozens lost their homes in the Powerhouse Fire last June, federal officials say the cause was what many suspected all along -- downed power lines near a 96-year-old power plant Powerhouse No. 1. “The U.S. Forest Service determined the cause of the Powerhouse Fire to be electrical power lines creating a competent ignition source,” according to a U.S. Forest Service news release Monday. “All other causes were excluded.” All fire causes were considered, investigated and evaluated during the Powerhouse Fire investigation, officials said, which has lasted more than a year.

Court Officials Decry Budget, Say Delays Will Continue

A county court official criticized California’s 2014-15 budget in response to its recent approval by Gov. Jerry Brown. And while the effects of past cuts are likely to continue, additional cuts aren't expected, an official said Monday. The courts don’t anticipate any further reduction of service, a court official said Monday. However, the new spending plan won’t allow for the restoration of “painful” self-inflicted budget cuts the courts have undergone over the last few years, said Mary Hearn, spokeswoman for Los Angeles County Superior Court. “Those were all very painful, but now we’re on solid footing,” Hearn said. “The amount allocated to the trial courts in the budget that was just signed won’t allow us to restore those cuts.”
