You may have heard or read about Metro’s proposal to expedite construction of new Interstate 5 carpool lanes by offering optional access to driver-only vehicles willing to pay a toll to use those lanes to save time. The Santa Clarita Water Agency Receives Budget Awards

The Santa Clarita Water (SCWD) a division of Castaic Lake Water Agency received the Distinguished Budget Presentation Award presented by the Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA) of the United States and Canada for its FY 2012/13 Budget.

This award reflects the commitment of the governing body and staff to meet the highest principles of governmental budgeting. This is the second consecutive year in which SCWD has received this award.

Rainbow Dental Center Open New Location In Canyon Country

With a new center expected to help more than 4,000 local residents this year, Rainbow Dental Center officials hosted a ribbon cutting ceremony Wednesday morning to celebrate the opening of a new Canyon Country location.

The center offers dental services to prenatal women and children from ages 6 months to young adults until their 21st birthday, focusing on serving the uninsured and underserved sectors of the population.

Santa Clarita Valley Historical Society To Commemorate St. Francis Dam Disaster

The Santa Clarita Valley Historical Society will host a tour of the St. Francis Dam site on Saturday, March 16, just 4 days after the 85th anniversary of the second-worst natural disaster to in California history.

Hart District Announces 32nd Annual Honor Band Performance

Junior High and High School students from throughout the William S. Hart Union High School District will perform as the District Honor Band, Saturday March 2 at 7:30 p.m. in the Hart High School Auditorium on Newhall Avenue. Out of the 800 students who auditioned for a place in the band, about 175 students have been selected. The community is invited to attend, and tickets are $12 at the door.

Santa Clarita City Council Discuss Free Speech, Bridgeport

Santa Clarita City Council members sent staffers back to the drawing board on a sign ordinance and OK’ed a hybrid plan to bring a park and a parking lot to Bridgeport Marketplace on Tuesday.

The ordinance came in response to myriad concerns regarding election time signage that proliferated around the city.

Valencia Baseball Team Explodes For 12 Runs In Easton Tournament

The Valencia baseball team beat El Camino Real, 12-1, in pool play in the Easton Tournament. The Vikings scored 11 runs in the fifth inning.

AJ Balta went 2-for-4 with a two-run triple and scored two runs. Valencia starter Luke Soroco gave up only two hits in six innings to the reigning CIF City Section Division 1 champions.

Valencia improved to 2-0.

Dirk Fischer, Longtime COC Jazz Director, Dies At 88

Stewart Roussin Fischer, better known as “Dirk” Fischer, noted composer, arranger, trumpeter, valve trombonist and head of the College of the Canyons Jazz Department for more than 28 years, died Monday at Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital in Valencia. He was 88.

New Homes Are On The Books For Saugus, Canyon Country

A residential community of 499 homes is on the books to fill the gap between the Bouquet-Plum intersection in Saugus on the north, and the west end of Ermine Street in Canyon Country on the south.
