Grace Baptist Celebrates 50th Anniversary By Giving Back

Just in time for the holiday season, five different non-profit organizations across the Santa Clarita Valley are receiving $5,000 each from Grace Baptist Church as part of the congregation’s 50th anniversary celebration.

SBDC Receives Grant To Expand Antelope Valley Service

The Small Business Development Center (SBDC) hosted by College of the Canyons has received a $25,000 grant from Los Angeles County Supervisor Michael D. Antonovich.

The grant will support the SBDC’s Antelope Valley location and the many free services provided to small businesses owners in the region.

The additional grant funding will allow the SBDC to expand its free one-on-one business consulting services and classroom and computer based training programs, while providing additional targeted resources for small business owners.

Album Cover Exhibit Coming To COC Art Gallery

The College of the Canyons Art Gallery will present its final exhibition of 2012, “Vinyl/The Art of the Album Cover” beginning Thursday, Nov. 29.

Providing a trip down memory lane for music lovers from the “vinyl” era, the exhibition will feature a look at the artistic evolution of the LP (Long Playing format) album cover, primarily focusing on covers produced from the late 1950s through the 1990s.

Seniors Invited to Free Thanksgiving Feast

A free Thanksgiving feast is being offered to all local seniors on Thursday, Thanksgiving Day, at the Santa Clarita Valley Senior Center.

Hosted by the Santa Clarita and Castaic Lions clubs and the William S. Hart Union High School District, the event is an opportunity for seniors and volunteers to gather and enjoy entertainment, good company and a gourmet Thanksgiving feast that includes mashed potatoes from Salt Creek Grille, vegetables from the TPC Valencia, salad from Vines at the Hyatt Valencia and stuffing from Larsen's Steakhouse.

Saugus Man Garners 2 Awards at WMAs


Songwriter Les Buffham of Saugus picked up two awards Saturday night at the Western Music Association’s annual awards show in the historic  KiMo Theatre in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

Buffham was named Male Poet of the Year, while his song, “No Wilder Place,” which he co-wrote with singer Mary Kaye, was named Song of the Year.

California Credit Union Announces Grants For Local Schools

Celebrating its partnership with local schools, the California Credit Union announced $1,500 in awards to: Wendy Shaner of Canyon Springs Elementary; Michael Mansfield of Bowman High School; and Janie Prucha of Golden Valley High School.

Annual Tree Lighting To Honor Military

The annual Military Honor Christmas Tree Lighting at the Veterans Historical Plaza in Newhall, scheduled for Saturday, December 1 at 7 p.m., will be celebrated with music, prayers and speakers.

Bag-a-Ticket At Six Flags This Wednesday

For the tenth consecutive year, Six Flags Magic Mountain will collect food for the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank during the annual “Bag-A-Ticket” holiday food drive. On Wednesday, November 21, guests who bring a full bag of non-perishable food items will receive a freepark admission ticket, good for that day. All donated food will be given to the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank. Through the public’s generous donations, this drive continues to be one of the largest single-day food collection efforts for the Food Bank.

Valencia Football Team Advances To Semifinals Of CIF Playoffs

The Valencia football team is the only team from the Santa Clarita Valley still alive in the CIF playoffs.

The Vikings shut down the high-powered Quartz Hill offense and won, 42-7, in the quarterfinals of the Southern Section Northern Division playoffs.

Valencia quarterback Sean Murphy threw for 349 yards and four touchdowns after building a 28-7 lead.

The Vikings, seeded No. 2 in the playoffs, reached the semifinals for the third time in the past four years. They face third-seeded Palos Verdes on Friday night.
