    Water Safety Primary Goal Of Fire Department Event

    Summer is just a few weeks away, and the Los Angeles County Fire Department is asking parents to be extra cautious this season - especially around bodies of water.

     

    The Fire Department led a regional water safety expo Saturday to reduce the risk of near-drowning and focus on an alarming increase of accidental drownings in our own backyard.

    Free Lunch Program Starts At Local Park, School Facilities

    School-Food-1-640x458The Santa Clarita Valley Food Services Agency has announced its participation in the 2012 summer free meal program, sponsored by the California Department of Education and the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

    The agency invites all children between the ages of 1 and 18 to participate. There are no income restrictions, as the meals are made available under the federal child nutrition program. Meals must be consumed on the facility premises.

    Major Marijuana Plantation Found, Destroyed In Los Padres National Forest

    LospadresgrasstwoOn Friday, Ventura County Sheriff’s Narcotics Detectives eradicated a major marijuana plantation in the Ozena area of the Los Padres National Forest north of Ojai. The growing marijuana was discovered during an over flight with the Sheriff’s Air Unit.

    One Arrested At Friday's DUI Checkpoint, Another Checkpoint Set For This Week

    DUIcheckpointLASDOne person was arrested on suspicion of drunk driving at a DUI/driver’s license checkpoint Friday night on Magic Mountain Parkway near Avignon Drive in Valencia.

    A total of 1,204 vehicles were screened and four drivers were given field sobriety tests at the checkpoint, which ran from 6 p.m. to 2 p.m.

    Saugus District Restores 15 Teaching Positions

    saugusschooldistrictThe Saugus Union School District has restored fifteen laid off general education teachers after a careful review of student enrollment and staff attrition.

    Superintendent Joan Lucid said, “This brings our general education staffing to 320 teaching positions, as was originally budgeted for in March. We will be carefully monitoring student enrollment throughout the summer in hopes of being able to restore additional positions.”

    Businesses To Get Free Recycling Containers

    recycle-symbol-prev1224249920jnogvvThe City of Santa Clarita, in partnership with Burrtec Waste Industries, Inc., is encouraging local businesses to increase waste reduction efforts by offering free, recycling containers.

    Beginning Sunday, July 1, 2012, Assembly Bill 341 will require all California businesses that produce more than 4-cubic-yards of commercial solid waste to establish and maintain recycling services.
