The Santa Clarita Valley Food Services Agency has announced its participation in the 2012 summer free meal program, sponsored by the California Department of Education and the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

The agency invites all children between the ages of 1 and 18 to participate. There are no income restrictions, as the meals are made available under the federal child nutrition program. Meals must be consumed on the facility premises.

One person was arrested on suspicion of drunk driving at a DUI/driver’s license checkpoint Friday night on Magic Mountain Parkway near Avignon Drive in Valencia.

A total of 1,204 vehicles were screened and four drivers were given field sobriety tests at the checkpoint, which ran from 6 p.m. to 2 p.m.

The Saugus Union School District has restored fifteen laid off general education teachers after a careful review of student enrollment and staff attrition.

Superintendent Joan Lucid said, “This brings our general education staffing to 320 teaching positions, as was originally budgeted for in March. We will be carefully monitoring student enrollment throughout the summer in hopes of being able to restore additional positions.”

The Santa Clarita Shakespeare Festival received word that it is the recipient of a generous grant from the Henry Mayo Newhall Foundation.

The grant is in support of the free and educational programs provided by Shakespeare Festival, including the free Shakespeare in the Park, the free High School Apprentice Summer Program, and an annual tour of Romeo & Juliet for local 9th grade students.
