FINAL: EdHead, Wilk Advance To Assembly Runoff

Granada Hills Democrat Edward Headington took an early lead in Tuesday's race to succeed Cameron Symth in the Assembly and held it with 31.6 percent of the vote.

College of the Canyons Trustee Scott Wilk, a Santa Clarita Republican, closed in on Headington as the vote tally progressed throughout the night. In the end, he finished second with 31.3 percent.

UPDATED: St. Louis Cardinals pick COC's Cory Jones In MLB Draft

khts_sportsCollege of the Canyons pitcher Cory Jones was selected by the St. Louis Cardinals in the fifth round of the Major League Baseball draft.

Jones, a right-handed starter, transferred from Pepperdine to College of the Canyons for his sophomore season.

He was 6-0 in 11 games and had a 2.79 ERA at COC. Jones had 89 strikeouts in 61 1/3 innings pitched.

Pre-Trial Conference Set For Alleged Pedophile Downs

Michael_Downs_mugA pre-trial conference has been set July 17 for alleged pedophile Michael Downs of Valencia, who faces 34 sex-related charges involving 15 victims, one as young as 12 years of age.

Thirty-three of the charges are for felonies and one is a misdemeanor.

Those charges include Unlawful Sexual Intercourse with a Minor, Sexual Penetration with a Foreign Object, Oral Copulation with a Person Under 16, Sexual Battery and Sending Harmful Matter.

Los Angeles Dodgers Hall of Fame manager Tommy Lasorda suffered a mild heart attack Monday while in New York for the Major League Baseball 2012 First-Year Player Draft.

Lasorda, 84, was taken to New York-Presbyterian Hospital/Columbia University Medical Center for treatment.
