California Infant Mortality Rate Reaches Record Low

cdphlogoCalifornia’s infant mortality rate has reached a record low, announced Dr. Ron Chapman, state health officer and director of the California Department of Public Health (CDPH).

In 2010, the most recent year data are available, the rate was 4.7 infant deaths per 1,000 live births, down from 4.9 infant deaths per 1,000 live births in 2009. Infant mortality is defined as the number of deaths in infants under one year of age.

COC's Chris Low Wins State Title In 800

khts_sportsChris Low from College of the Canyons won the state title in the 800 for the second year in a row.

Low won the 800 in 1 minute, 49.16 seconds at the California Community College Athletic Association track and field meet at Cerritos College. He was one of six athletes from College of the Canyons to earn All-America honors at the meet.

saugus_union_sdA Qualified Certification has been assigned to the Saugus Union School District (SUSD) indicating it may not meet its financial obligations for the current or two subsequent fiscal years.

The designation is being reported in the just released California Department of Education’s Second Interim Status Report, Fiscal Year 2011-12.

On May 23, 1941, townsfolk gathered at the corner of Spruce Street and 11th Street for the gala opening of the theater, where Hart himself welcomed visitors to the first theater built in the Santa Clarita Valley.

Council Agenda Includes Budget Review


The Santa Clarita City Council is set to hold a public hearing Tuesday night on the $183.3 million budget proposed for the city’s 2012/13 fiscal year.

If adopted at the council’s June 13 meeting, the budget represents a 15 percent increase from the previous fiscal year.

A woman died Sunday morning when she was ejected from her vehicle on Soledad Canyon Road.

Det. Mike Shapiro, a traffic investigator for the SCV Sheriff's station, said that the victim was Amber Popiel, 30, of Canyon Country.

The process is moving forward for development on the sprawling Golden Oak movie ranch owned by Disney on the east side of Highway 14, as the several-thousand-page draft environmental impact report has been released.

UPDATED: Brush Fire Burning Near Truck Lanes Of 210 West to NB I-5

The connector lane between the 210 West and the truck lanes to the northbound I-5 is shut down and a Sigalert has been declared, expected to last one hour.

A brush fire was reported on the northbound I-5 between the 210 and 14 freeways, near the truck route. The location has now been updated to 210 West truck lanes to I-5 North.
