The nonprofit Safe Action for the Environment Inc. has launched an online petition and letter-writing drive seeking support for Senate Bill S. 759, authored by Sen. Barbara Boxer to stop the development of a massive sand and gravel mine in Soledad Canyon.

Fish food and cream puffs are the subject of recalls by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, the first due to potential salmonella contamination and the second for unlisted milk products that could cause adverse reactions to those with milk allergies.

The College of the Canyons softball team swept a doubleheader with Glendale College. The Cougars won the first game, 6-2, and the nightcap, 8-7.

Jenny Wunderlich had two hits and scored twice in the first game for COC.

Adriana Correra drove in the winning run with a double in the sixth inning for COC in the second game.

COC improved to 9-2 in the Western State Conference and is 3-0 against second-place Glendale College.

There’s some woeful howling going on at the Lazy Dog Café at the Westfield Valencia Town Center, mourning the loss of beloved bartender Ian Long, who died in his sleep Saturday night.

Long had worked at the popular café since its opening a few years ago and was a favorite of many customers. His friends and co-workers talked about his impromptu singing and the uncanny way he knew his customers – even if he never met them before.
