What should have been a feel good moment for the city council, the opportunity to deliver $48,000 worth of arts grants to deserving arts organizations, got off to a Rocky, er...rocky start as the kid gloves were threatened to be removed.

Before council discussion was over, those arts organizations who’d expected $7,500 grants faced losing hundreds of dollars, and the respect of the Arts Commission’s decision-making process would come into question.

Last year five young people died of heroin overdoses in the Santa Clarita Valley, according to stats from the SCV Sheriff's Station. But heroin isn't the community's only challenge when it comes to illegal or illicit drugs.

For Council Member Marsha McLean there just wasn’t enough time to discuss transportation issues when she attended meetings downtown.

“Individuals are given somewhere around 45 seconds up to 90 seconds, if you’re lucky, to make the case,” said McLean.

Her long held desire to form an advocacy group was fulfilled when the Santa Clarita Valley Transportation Coalition held its first meeting at City Hall on Monday.
