    Sheriff Warns New Year's Eve Celebrants: No Gunfire, Fireworks

    bacaLos Angeles County Sheriff's deputies will be out in force to track down and arrest anyone who fires a gun into the air or sets off illegal fireworks while celebrating New Year's Eve.

    At a news conference this morning, Sheriff Lee Baca (pictured), country District Attorney Steve Cooley and city of Los Angeles officials announced they have launched a campaign to reduce gunfire throughout the county.

    New Laws For Californians Kick In On Sunday

    In 2012, Californians will see a host of new laws and regulations go into effect – from increasing the age of children requiring booster seats in cars to prohibiting the sale of live animals on street corners or parking lots to internet bullying and eliminating the “open carry” of handguns – starting Sunday.

    In 2011, all 50 states and territories met in regular session and enacted close to 40,000 new laws on issues across the board. The National Conference of State Legislatures compiled the following list of laws that will become effective in California on New Year's Day.

    New laws going into effect Sunday cover some of the nation's most contentious issues, from immigration to abortion, while others deal with tanning beds, tuition and where you can sell a pet.

    In all, nearly 40,000 laws were enacted in 2011, according to the National Conference of State Legislatures. Some take effect New Year's Day.

    Canyon Boys Basketball Team Advances To Ventura Tournament Title Game

    khts_sportsThe Canyon boys basketball team is in position to win the Ventura tournament. Canyon needed a big game from Coley Apsay and Clay Kasdorf to beat Oxnard, 68-64, in the semifinals.

    Apsay and Kasdorf each scored 24 points. Canyon will play host Ventura in the championship game of the tournament tonight.

    The Hart boys beat Reseda, 81-58, on the second day of the Hart Holiday Classic. Austin Maly scored 27 points and hit seven 3-pointers to lead Hart.

    December 28, 2011 Kings Ice Blackhawks 2-0

    Wednesday, the Kings were in Chicago to faceoff against the Blackhawks. Chicago was unable to connect with the net with Kings goals scored in the second and third period of play. The goal in the second was knocked in by Trent Hunter at 12:07 and in the third, Jarret Stoll scored at 1:16. The Blackhawks who lead the NHL with 50 points were shutout for the fourth time this season. 2 to 0 was the final.
