Saugus, Valencia Advance To Second Round Of CIF Girls Volleyball Playoffs

khts_sportsThe Saugus girls volleyball team swept St. Joseph of Santa Maria in three games in the first round of the CIF Southern Section Division 1A playoffs.

Sarah Blomgren led Saugus with 13 kills. Teammate Hannah Nua had 12 kills and Jaclyn Clark had nine kills and 14 digs.

The Valencia girls volleyball team advanced into the second round of the playoffs with a four-game win over Atascadero.

Sydney Striff led Valencia with 14 kills.

November 8 2011: Kings Beat Predators 4-3

The Kings hold on and get a win against the Nashville Predators Tuesday night and snap a five game losing streak. The Kings would score first with goals by Alec Martinez and Drew Doughty midway through the 1st period. The Predators would come right back to tie the game late in the first period by scoring two goals. In the 2nd period, Mike Richards and Simon Gagne would each score a goal putting the Kings up by two in the 2nd period. The Predators pulled their goalie in a last ditch attempt late in the 3rd period to tie the game and scored one goal but was not enough to overcome the Kings.

Emergency Winter Shelter Hosts Comedy Fundraiser, Open House

shelter_logoThe Santa Clarita Valley Emergency Winter Shelter will host a comedy fundraiser and an open house for the community in the week prior to opening its doors for the season on Dec. 1.

It will be the 15th winter the shelter has provided hot meals, a safe environment, shelter and important job and medical resources to the local homeless population.

City Council Approves 1.2 Million Dollars For Park-and-Ride Land

city_council_11_8_11At Tuesday night’s meeting the Santa Clarita City Council authorized $1.2 million to purchase 6.4 acres of prime Valencia real estate with plans to build a Park-and-Ride.

Spencer Sager, the coordinator of his Boeing company van pool, enthusiastically supported the proposal.

“There’s no park-n-rides on the west side corridor along I-5. There’s plenty along 14 but nothing over here,” Sager said.

First-Ever Test Of Nationwide Emergency Alert System To Take Place 11 A.M. Wednesday

fema_logoAt 11 a.m. Wednesday, an interruption of historic proportions will take place and KHTS AM1220 will bring it to you live.

At that time, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security's Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) will conduct the first-ever nationwide test of the Emergency Alert System (EAS). The test will last approximately 30 seconds.

Animal Shelters To Hold Open Houses Wednesday

sheltersrockThis is National Animal Shelter Appreciation Week and the County of Los Angeles Department of Animal Care and Control is celebrating the community, the animals, staff and volunteers.

All six County Animal Care Centers will host an Open House from noon to 2 p.m. Wednesday, November 9. The Castaic shelter, serves the Santa Clarita valley and the surrounding areas, is located at 21044 N. Charlie Canyon Road.

UPDATED: California-Grown Tree Heading For U.S. Capitol Stops in SCV Saturday

CapitolChristmasTreeThe 63-foot tall U.S. Capitol Christmas Tree is traveling across the country this fall and will stop in Santa Clarita from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Saugus Speedway/Swap Meet on Soledad Canyon Boulevard in Saugus on Saturday, Nov. 12.
