    Black Friday Jedi Lightsaber Camp ­Raises Funds For The SCV Food Pantry

    jediknightsParents who want to hit the Black Friday after-Thanksgiving sales without the kids, or just take it easy after the busy Thanksgiving holiday can bring them to Ekata Martial Arts in Valencia.

    On November 25, Ekata Martial Arts is offering non-students the chance to train like a Jedi with martial arts professionals. The cost is just $10 and all proceeds will benefit the Santa Clarita Valley Food Pantry.

    Fifth Annual Beast Challenge To Raise Funds For Food Pantry

    scv-food-pantry-logoThere’s a challenge taken on every year by brave and resilient runners – known as The Beast - and this year’s Day of Reckoning is Saturday, December 10.

    The Santa Clarita Runners invite all to the Beast Charity Run/Walk at 7:30 a.m. that day, with proceeds donated to the Santa Clarita Valley Food Pantry.

    Deputies Respond To Friday Night Fight At Hyatt

    A mixed martial arts event billed as “SCV Fight Night” got out of hand Friday when an unscheduled fight broke out at the Hyatt Regency Valencia hotel.

    SCV Sheriff’s Lt. Mark Hershey said an off-duty Los Angeles Police officer who attended the event called the sheriffs when members of the crowd got unruly.

    Initially reported as 150 people involved in a fight and all of them intoxicated, Hershey said that wasn’t the case.

    Gains But No Champagne On Jobless Numbers

    Santa Clarita’s jobless rate continued to tumble in October, falling to 7.3 percent from 7.6 percent in September. It stood at 8.3 percent just three months earlier.

    Los Angeles County saw its October jobless rate fall to 12.2 percent from 12.4 percent in September and 12.9 percent a year ago.

    Rash Of Vehicle Burglaries In Saugus

    khts_crimeSeveral vehicle burglaries happened overnight in the Saugus area, according to Sheriff’s officials.

    Lt. Joseph Efflandt told KHTS that the rash of burglaries happened in the area of Seco Canyon Road and Evergreen Lane in Saugus. Efflandt said that there were six reported incidents so far.

    None of the vehicles’ windows were broken; access to the vehicle was made with a burglary tool such as a slim jim or the vehicles were not locked.

    Transient Beaten, Left Behind Liquor Store, Three Suspects Sought

    khts_crime_genericDeputies are searching the riverbed behind Art’s Liquor in Canyon Country for three suspects wanted for beating a transient.

    Lt. Joseph Efflandt of the Santa Clarita Valley sheriff’s station said that deputies found a victim who said that three men beat him.

     

    City Plans To Buy Placerita Inholding To Connect Trails

    The Santa Clarita City Council will consider a staff proposal Tuesday to purchase 17.2 acres of raw, landlocked land in Placerita Canyon and preserve it as permanent open space.

    No Speed Bump For High Speed Rail

    California_High_Speed_Rail_copy_copyThe California High Speed Rail Authority (CaHSRA) was unfazed by the news that the U.S House of Representatives killed funding for high-speed rail in its 2012 budget.

    “The project isn’t dependent on 2012 federal funding. Our recently released business plan assumes no federal funding before 2014,” said Rachel Wall, spokesperson for CaHSRA.
